GO SELL YOUR POSSESSIONS - Matthew 19: 16-22
When Jesus was walking this earth, what things did He truly value? You can tell how much people value something by how much they talk about it. When we read through the Gospels, what things do we see that Jesus truly valued? It doesn’t take long to realize that Jesus valued the poor. On at least twenty different occasions, we find Jesus either speaking about or ministering to the poor. What was it about ministering to the poor that Jesus found so valuable?
Again, what was it about ministering to the poor that Jesus found so valuable? The value is twofold. Yes, it provides a valuable service to those less fortunate. But also, it provides a valuable service to those of us who are called to “go.” It is difficult to go where Jesus calls us when we are shackled by the weight of this world. In another passage, Jesus said to “‘…seek first His kingdom and His righteousness; and all these things shall be added to you,’” (NASB, Matthew 6:33). In the same breath, He said we cannot do that and seek the “mammon” of this world at the same time.
