LIVING LIKE JESUS: Serving Others
The kingdom of God is a kingdom of servants rather than masters. All followers of Jesus are expected to be a servant no matter how important they may seem to themselves or to others. Down through history a person’s status has been typically determined by things such as power, prestige, or wealth. As we have seen before, Jesus had a different message. Jesus said things like: “‘If anyone wants to be first, he shall be last of all and servant of all,’” (NASB, Mark 9:35). To be a servant or to serve others, however, has never been popular. That is why Jesus’ teaching and example of serving others is so radically different.
Paul wrote to the Christians in Ephesus: “For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them,” (NASB, Ephesians 2:10). These are not good works we do to earn our salvation, as Paul pointed out in the previous verses. These are good works we do because we are saved. If we would live like Jesus, we realize what He has done for us, so we do good works, such as serving others, to share the love that He has shown us.
