Devotion & Distress
In most cases, laughter is not our typical response to trials. Yet the concept of rejoicing in trials is not foreign to Scripture. James mentions it in the opening to his letter when he writes: “Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials,” (James 1:2, NASB). And Peter reminds his readers to “…rejoice, even though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been distressed by various trials,” (1 Peter 1:6, NASB). Although we might see the immediate value in being able to maintain joy in times of trial, actually doing it is quite difficult. How can we maintain our joy and devotion in times of trial and despair?
Christians are not exempt from life’s struggles. Most of us have had times where we feel like our life is falling apart around us. The words of Peter remind us that as long as our foundation is strong, God will fix it. Peter encourages his readers to have a foundation of hope that comes from believing that Jesus has a place reserved for us in heaven. As we often sing, “Jesus, You’re my firm foundation, I know I can stand secure.” Because of that firm foundation, the song goes on to say, “I have a living hope…”
